What is Automobile?  

The automobile is a self-propelled vehicle that travels on land. It usually has four wheels. An engine provides the power to move the vehicle. The automobile or car carries people primarily for their personal transportations.

 • Or’ "An automobile or motor car is a wheeled motor vehicle for transporting passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for one to eight people, to typically have four wheels, and to be constructed principally for the transport of people rather than goods.


HISTORY OF AUTOMOBILE

Steam Powered self-propelled vehicles were devised in the late 17th century. 
In 1865 Locomotive Act passed for self-propelled vehicles in UK


Classification of Automobile:

Automobiles or vehicles can be classified as follows: 

On the basis of use: 

  • Auto cycle 
  •  Motorcycle 
  • Car 
  • Bus & truck etc.
On Basis of Load  

  • Heavy transport vehicle (HTV) or heavy motor vehicle (HMV), e.g., trucks, buses etc. 
  • Light transport vehicle (LTV), e.g., pickup, station wagon etc. 
  • Light motor vehicle (LMV), e.g., cars, jeeps etc.

On the basis of make and model

ASTON MARTIN, AUDI, BMW, FERRARI, FORD, FUJI, GM, HONDA, HYUNDAI, JAGUAR, KIA, LAND ROVER, LOTUS, MAZDZ, MERCEDES BENZ, MITSUBISHI, NISSAN, PORSCHE, ROLLS-ROYCE, SPYKER, TOYOTA, SUZUKI, VOLKSWAGEN, VOLVO.

 On Basis of Fuel Used

  • Petrol e.g., motorcycle, scooter, cars etc. 
  • Diesel vehicle, e.g., trucks, buses etc. 
  • Electric vehicle which uses battery to drive. 
  • Steam vehicle, e.g., an engine which uses steam engine. These engines are now obsolete. 
  • Gas vehicle, e.g., LPG and CNG vehicles, where LPG is liquefied petroleum gas and CNG is compressed natural gas.

On Basis of Body Structure or Shape 

  • Sedan Station wagon 
  • Convertible passenger car 
  • Jeep 
  • Van 
  • Special purpose vehicle: Ambulance, milkvan etc. 
On Basis of Number of Wheels 

  • Two-wheeler vehicle: Scooter, motorcycle etc. 
  • Three-wheeler vehicle: Autorickshaw, three-wheel scooter etc. 
  •  Four-wheeler vehicle: Car, jeep, trucks, buses etc. 
  • Six-wheeler vehicle and so on: Truck switch two gear axles each having four wheels. 
 On the basis of Transmission system 

  • Conventional ---Ordinary type clutch and Gear box 
  • Semi-automatic---Automatic clutch control 
  • Fully automatic--All control is automatic 

Based on Drive

  • Left hand drive automobile, e.g., USA 
  • Right hand drive automobile, e.g., Bangladesh 

On the basis of Drive wheel

  • Front Engine rear wheel drive, 
  • Rear Engine rear wheel drive, 
  • Front Engine front wheel drive, 
  • Four-wheel drive
